About Brownings Garage in Angel, Islington

Brownings Garage has been trading in Angel, Islington since 1910 – making us one of the longest-established independent garages in the area.

The business was founded by Cyril Browning, a metalworker by trade, who began by repairing the trellis-frame motorbikes of the era. The frames were stripped down, straightened using sand, a plank with a hole in it, and a small fire, then re-welded and reassembled – practical, precise work that set the tone for everything that followed.

As car ownership grew through the 1920s, the garage moved with it. A single handmade ramp marked the shift to four wheels, and the business has been evolving ever since.

Cyril’s young mechanic, Henry Brown, left during the Second World War to build tanks at Leyland. When he returned, Cyril’s health had declined, and Henry took over the garage around 1947. It’s now run by Henry’s family – the third generation – and next year marks 75 years of Brown family ownership.

Built for what’s next

The garage underwent a major refurbishment in 2009–10, expanding to its current 4-bay layout and bringing in the kind of equipment more commonly associated with franchised dealers. That investment reflects a deliberate philosophy: keep pace with the vehicles people actually drive, and do the work properly or not at all.

The shift towards hybrid, electric, and ultra-lean-burn engines has changed the nature of the job significantly, and we’ve changed with it. We work on EVs and hybrids alongside conventional vehicles, and we continue to invest in the tooling and training that modern powertrains demand. With Angel, Islington inside the ULEZ boundary and London’s long-term direction of travel firmly towards cleaner, more efficient vehicles, we’re well positioned for where the industry is heading.

What we do

We’re best known for MOT testing, servicing, and repairs, and we work across a wide range of makes and models. Our primary specialisms are VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Porsche, and Mercedes, with the diagnostic capability and hands-on experience to match – or exceed – what you’d find at a franchised dealer.

All servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule, using original equipment or equivalent specification parts. For vehicles within the manufacturer’s warranty period, we meet the intervals and requirements that keep that warranty intact.

We also carry out wheel alignment, fast-fit work, and anything else your vehicle needs. Where something falls outside what we handle in-house, we’ll arrange it and keep the process straightforward for you.

The workshop

Our 4-bay workshop is clean, well-equipped, and built for efficiency. In-ground lifts, an automated MOT test lane, Autologic diagnostic systems, and Hunter 3D wheel alignment technology sit alongside accreditations from the IMI, Castrol, Autologic Diagnostics, and Pico Technology. Everything is on display. Nothing is hidden.
